Ours is a working farm of approximately
4500 macadamia trees, the majority of which were planted in 1989.
The younger trees are all new Australian varieties. A lot of our
farm is mechanically harvested but we still handpick the steeper
slopes. At the very centre of our plantation is a regenerated rainforest,
with some old-growth forest. Thousands of trees, native to the area,
cover this site.
This area is the original home of the macadamia, a native Australian
rainforest tree. The rich fertile volcanic soils and the warm sub-tropical
climate of the Byron hinterland are the ideal conditions for growing
macadamias.
We grow over five different varieties of macadamia trees. Each
area of this land is planted with a specific variety depending on
the north or south facing aspect of the land. Some varieties are
more wind resistant than others and need protection. All thrive
in this coastal climate. |
